Biography

Since leaving the FEMIS Film School in 1993, François Ozon has made films that explore the themes of sexuality and transgression going beyond the establish bounds of behavior standards. All his short films have been highly acclaimed, winning various awards at international film festivals, as was his medium-length film, “Regarde la mer,” shot in 1997. In 1998, Ozon directed his first feature, “Sitcom.” His third feature, "Water Drops on Burning Rocks" is a screen adaptation of a stage play by German R.W. Fassbinder, starring Bernard Giraudeau and Anna Thomson. The film was selected in the Official Competition at Berlin in 2000, and won the Teddy Award for Best Film dealing with a homosexual context. The jury of the New York Gay Film Festival voted the film (the only French title in the Selection) Best Fiction Film. In 2002, François Ozon was nominated for the first time at the French Cesar Awards for "Under the Sand," in the Best Director and Best Film categories. His next film, "8 Women," featuring a stellar cast including Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert and Fanny Ardant, has been a resounding success with the public and critics alike.
