This year, apart from Marion Cotillard who will receive the honorary Donostia Award, Laurent Cantet, Thierry De Peretti, and Claire Simon will be representing France for the 69th edition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival (September 17 through 25 ), the third major international film event of the fall, after the festivals of Toronto and Venice.
The second selection in Competition at San Sebastián for Laurent Cantet after Foxfire (2012) and the first for Thierry De Peretti and Claire Simon: this will be the trio of French filmmakers presenting their new works this year in the running for the Golden Shell, awarded at the end of the most important film festival in Spain. Not to mention Lucile Hadzihalilovic, whose new film Earwig is a minority coproduction with the United Kingdom and Belgium).
In terms of "new faces," Flore Vasseur will present, Out of Competition, her documentary Bigger Than Us, and the animation filmmaker Florence Miailhe will present, in the Zabaltegi section, her debut animation feature, The Crossing, after making short films for thirty years.
Lastly, the Perlak section, which brings together films from the year's major international festivals, will allow to audiences to discover French faces and films seen in Cannes in July.
French cinema is also very present, as usual, in international coproductions, with a dozen other films presented during the festival.
About thirty French artists will be present, including (to be confirmed): Swann Arlaud, Leïla Bekhti, Damien Bonnard, Laurent Cantet, Emmanuel Carrère, Julia Ducournau, Thierry De Peretti, Emmanuelle Devos, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Louis Garrel, Xavier Giannoli, Vincent Lindon, Pio Marmaï, Noémie Merlant, François Ozon, Céline Sciamma, Claire Simon, Benjamin Voisin, and Roschdy Zem.
After Agnès Varda in 2017 and Costa Gavras in 2019, Marion Cotillard is being honored this year by the festival, receiving (jointly with Johnny Depp), a Donostia Award for lifetime achievement. The actress will also present the documentary Bigger Than Us, which she coproduced.
UniFrance will organize a cocktail event on September 19 for all the French talents present in San Sebastían, as well as the Spanish distributors.
