Released in the United States on September 20, "8 Women" by François Ozon has already clocked up US$1.2 million at the box office after 17 days on the screens.
Distributed by Focus Features, with 3 prints released in New York/Los Angeles in its opening week, the hit musical has spread to 82 sites, taking out 21st place in the North American charts the October 4th weekend.
The film's crew has spared no efforts to promote the film in the USA, with visits by the director and actress Catherine Deneuve at the Toronto Festival, followed by New York, before the director set out on a tour of the major American cities.
It is worth noting that the 4 first films by François Ozon all gained release in the United States, but it was with "Under the Sand" and its $1.4 million in box office receipts that the director truly achieved wide audience support, making the film his first outright success in the territory.
To date, "8 Women" has pulled in 2.1 million spectators outside France in 15 countries (posting €12 million in receipts), with its upcoming release slated for some 30 countries.
"8 Women" was produced by Fidélité Productions (France). International sales of the film are handled by Celluloid Dreams.
