The 64th edition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival (SSIFF) came to a close on Saturday, September 24, 2016, with the announcement of the Golden Shell for Best Film, awarded to the Chinese film I Am Not Madame Bovary by Feng Xiaogang. French cinema was not neglected in the awards lineup, winning several prizes, via its many coproductions, mainly outside the official categories.
With more than 30 French artists (including Isabelle Huppert, Adèle Haenel, Bertrand Tavernier, Jean Becker, François Ozon, Arnaud Des Pallières, Bertrand Bonello, Lambert Wilson,Pierre Niney, to mention just a few) present, and 31 majority French films, including the festival's opening (150 Milligrams by Emmanuelle Bercot) and closing (The Odyssey by Jérôme Salle) titles, as well as the opening film for the Zabaltegi section (A Journey Through French Cinema by Bertrand Tavernier), and two French coproducers as jury members (Nadia Turincev for Rouge International, and Corinne Castel), during its 64th edition, the San Sebastian International Film Festival offered French cinema a visibility rarely shown for foreign films in this festival.
We should also note that the major Jacques Becker retrospective (15 films), presented by his son Jean Becker, was also accompanied by a special catalog, and that two masterclasses, given by Bertrand Bonello and Jean-Gabriel Périot, took place in the festival's new venue, the Tabakalera.
