After having worked his whole life on an 'estancia' in Patagonia, the old foreman, Evans, is forced to retire and Jara, a younger man, takes his place. Jara wants to settle in with his wife and child. But when winter comes, the region is blocked by the snow. It is no longer just a question of working but of surviving in extreme conditions. Desperate and alone, Evans tries to scare Jara in order to make him leave. A confrontation is inevitable, when one tries to come back, the other wants to stay. In the sumptuous and mysterious landscapes of Patagonia, the film recounts solitude, the harshness of work, and the difficulty of giving up one's place in the world.
