Biography

Luc Besson was born in Paris, and spent the early years of his life following his parents (both divers) around the world. When a teenager, he was overcome with a passion for the sea and dolphins in particular, and planned on becoming a marin biologist. But a diving accident when he was 17 meant he could no longer dive, forcing him to abandon this vocation. He moved back to Paris and began working as 2nd assistant and then assistant director on various film productions. He decided to pursue his movie apprenticeship in the United States, where he lived for three years. He returned to France and formed, in association with Pierre Jolivet, his own production company Films du Loup (which later changed its name to Films du Dauphin). This enabled him to direct his first feature film, "The Final Combat." The film, Grand Prize winner at the Avoriaz Film Festival, features Jean Réno, who has remained a loyal colleague, having made five other films with Besson. Besson convinced the Gaumont company to co-produce "Subway." The film was released in 1984 and featured a top cast: Isabelle Adjani, Christophe Lambert, Jean-Hugues Anglade and Richard Bohringer. Successes then followed one after the other: "The Big Blue" (1988), with Jean-Marc Barr, Rosanna Arquette and Jean Réno, became a cult film for a whole generation. 1990 saw the release of "La Femme Nikita" with Anne Parillaud, who won the Cesar for Best Actress. The film was also the object of an American remake. "The Professional" (1994) marked a turning point in Besson's career; from then on he favored international casts and English-language productions. In 1997, the mega-production "The Fifth Element" brought together Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman (who'd already appeared in "The Professional") and the actress Milla Jovovich, who Besson chose to play the title role in "Messenger: the Story of Joan of Arc" in 1999. Besson is also the screenwriter and producer of Gérard Pirès' "Taxi" and "Taxi 2," directed by Gérard Krawczyk, both enormous commercial hits. This year, he was the President of the 53rd Cannes International Film Festival.
