After seven years in prison, Mario Diccara is free at last. As he hasn't entirely settled all his business affairs with the underworld, he asks his brother Patrick, the only person he knows he can trust, to find him a hideout where he can hole up for awhile.
Patrick, a priest, suggests that Mario goes to stay with Father Etienne in his small village in the Ardèche region. Mario decks himself out with a priest's robe for the trip. But as soon as he arrives, his troubles begin: Father Etienne has died and the village inhabitants think Mario is the new priest.
