Continuing with an annual tradition, a presentation was made at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris announcing preliminary admissions estimates for French films abroad in the past year.
According to uniFrance films, French productions attracted 50 million spectators and generated €280 million in theaters outside France in 2013. This initial estimate confirms the downturn observed throughout 2013, which followed a year of record-breaking results for French films in 2012. There are several factors explaining this decline. Even though ten French titles released in 2013 achieved over 1 million admissions, only one film, The Family by Luc Besson, registered over 5 million spectators abroad. The year's five top performing titles represent 38% of total theatrical admissions, marking an extremely limited concentration of results.
For the first time, China stands out as our second largest market in terms of admissions, behind the USA. This is a new configuration for French films in the international market that reflects significant changes currently underway on a global scale.
