The Oscars win for "March of the Penguins" (also released as "The Emperor's Journey") tops of a fine career for the film, which has been seen by over 16 million spectators worldwide. Shot on a budget of €2.8 million, it has raked in 25 times that sum in North American theaters alone. With $77 million to date at the American box office, it has become the most successful French film in this territory ever, ousting "The Fifth Element" by Luc Besson and "Amelie" by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. "March of the Penguins" is also the best performing documentary in the United States since "Fahrenheit 9/11 by Michael Moore.
