Biography

Son of Moroccan immigrants, Roschdy Zem studied theatre and was a big soccer fan. His first film experience dates back to 1987 (an extra in "Lady Cops"). At the time he was earning a living selling jeans at the local market and had no pretentions of becoming an actor. It was an assistant of Andre Techine who singled him out for a couple of bit parts in the films "I Don't Kiss" (1991) and "My Favorite Season" (1991). He was still dabbling in theatre productions occasionally.
By the time Roschdy Zem turned 30, his career had started to take off, and notably because of two performances: a herion addict in "Don't Forget You're Going to Die" by Xavier Beauvois and a night porter in "To Have (or not)" by Laetitia Masson. He began to make the rounds in auteur cinema with his robust yet sensitive presence, in films by Chereau ("Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train"), Garrel and a number of first films such as "Louise (Take 2)", "The Other Shore" (1997) and "Living in Paradise" (1998).
Like Sami Bouajila, Roschdy Zem helped to open the way for actors of North African descent, in films of varied backgrounds from social commentaries ("Save Me" or the more easy-going "My Little Business" by Jolivet, for which he was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Cesar) to general public films ("The Race", "Blanche", and "Chouchou" in which he plays brother Jean) or psychological dramas ("Alias Betty", "Ordo"). Informer in "36", cop in "Le Petit lieutenant" by Beauvois (and another nomination for a Cesar), this method actor who learned Hebrew for "Live & Become" and a Serbian accent for "French California", won the Best Actor award at Cannes 2006 given to the ensemble cast of "Days of Glory", a war film portraying North African soldiers deployed during WWII.
That same year, he also made his directorial debut with "Bad Faith" (and lead actor), a comedy about a couple, she being Jewish (Cécile de France), he Islamic. In 2008, he's in love with "The Girl from Monaco", an over-trained cop ready to risk all in "Go Fast", or again with Pierre Jolivet in "La Très très grande enterprise". The critics were particularly attentive to his work as a lawyer in "Legal Aid" (2009) and the first film from his friend Pascal Elbé "Turk's Head". In 2010, Roschdy Zem was back in Cannes with his fellow Golden Palm winners, Jamel Debbouze et Sami Bouajila, for the film "Outside the Law".
