Biography

Benoît Jacquot started out in cinema as an assistant director, working in particular with Marguerite Duras. After directing several short films, he started making documentaries about Jacques Lacan, Alfred Deller and Merce Cunningham, to mention just a few. In 1975 he directed his first feature, "The Musician Killer," followed by "Les Enfants du placard," "Les Ailes de la colombe", "Corps et biens," and "Le Mendiant."

From 1982 to 1996, he directed three television adaptations of works by Kafka (“Une Villa aux environs de New York”), Borges (“Emma Zunz”) and Marivaux (“La Vie de Marianne”). He also filmed several plays, including a stage version of Louis-Ferdinand Céline’s “Journey to the End of the Night” starring Fabrice Luchini. Three feature films followed: “The Disenchanted” (1990), “A Single Girl” (1995, selected for Official Competition at the Cannes International Film Festival), “Seventh Heaven” (1997, selected for Official Competition at the Venice Film Festival). His tenth, “The School of Flesh” (1998), was also in Official Competition at Cannes.

In 1999, he cast Isabelle Huppert, Vincent Lindon and Fabrice Luchini in "Keep It Quiet," warmly received by both public and critics alike, and included the Official Competition line-up at the Venice Film Festival. "La fausse suivante," adapted from Marivaux's play and starring Isabelle Huppert, Sandrine Kiberlain and Pierre Arditi, was released in France on 8 March, 2000. "Sade," with Daniel Auteuil (released 23 August, 2000) has been shown at many international film festivals (Venice, Montreal, Toronto, Acapulco, London).
