Unifrance and the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs are delighted to present the 4th edition of On Set With French Cinema, to be held from October 10, 2006, through early January, 2007, in partnership with 10 American universities in the cities of New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
This year, seven French directors are invited to participate in the event: Anne Fontaine, Jacques Audiard, Costa Gavras, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Gaspar Noé, Nicolas Philibert, and Jean-Francois Richet.
These directors will share their experiences as filmmakers, actors’ directors, and screenwriters with students in film studies departments at the most prestigious universities in the United States. They will reveal their trade secrets, sharing reference material such as shooting schedules, storyboards, cut scenes, and so on. These meetings are incorporated as part of the university curriculum.
On Set With French Cinema will once again bring a selection of around 30 French films to a specifically targeted audience of future industry professionals in the USA. It will boost awareness of French directors in the USA, and complement promotional activities initiated by Unifrance, as well as strengthen French cinema's presence in American universities and Film Schools. This program offers a lineup of directors that reflects the richness and diversity of current French film production industry.
Since its inception in 2003, the On Set With French Cinema program has brought many French directors to the United States: Catherine Breillat, Claire Denis, Agnès Varda, Olivier Assayas, Luc Besson, Laurent Cantet, Patrice Chéreau, Bruno Dumont, Arnaud Desplechin, Benoît Jacquot, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Cédric Klapisch, Jan Kounen, Patrice Leconte, Claude Miller, Jean-Paul Rappeneau, Bertrand Tavernier, and Régis Wargnier have all gone out to meet with students at the most highly-regarded universities and Film Schools in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
The first European edition of On Set With French Cinema was held in Germany in April-May, 2005: 9 Film Schools in Berlin, Cologne, Munich, and Potsdam invited Noémie Lvovsky, Tonie Marshall, Cédric Klapisch, and Bertrand Tavernier to offer their "cinema lessons” to enthusiastic audiences.
