About
"Jérôme Beaujour had written a drole, indeed comic, script and I wanted to maintain that tone. The film consists of echoes and rhymes between the characters, situations that run the gamut from Freudian slips to little gags. I hope the end result is a comedy that's a little grating. When sewn together, I wanted it to be something at once radical and tender. There seems to me to be a kind of outrage, caricature in films that endeavor to show the bourgeois world and its façade. This can be amusing, but it tends to defuse the virulence of the intention. Buñuel is pretty much the only one who succeeded doing this, at a time when it was still possible to do. I don't think he'd do the same thing today. I think it's more interesting and amusing to introduce discreet, unsettling signs that upset things."
