Biography

Born in 1930 of Swiss extraction, the young movie fan Jean-Luc Godard became a critic for "Cahiers du cinéma" and the review "Arts." He was one of the new generation of filmmakers who actively challenged French cinema as being too academic. In 1954, he directed a documentary "Opération béton," which was followed by four short fiction films. His first feature, "Breathless" (1959, based on a subject by François Truffaut), starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg, was the manifesto film of the New Wave. Then "Le Petit Soldat" (1960) was banned by the censor until 1963. Tackling all genres (comedy, drama, satire, etc.), Godard created a constantly evolving cinema, revealing political, economic and moral realities, while exploring new kinds of expression allowed by modern techniques. From "Pierrot le fou" (1965), through to "La Chinoise" (1967) and "Weekend" (1968) - both predicting May 68 - to "First Name: Carmen" (1982), "Hail Mary" (1983), or "Alas for Me" (1993), Jean-Luc Godard disconcerts fans and enemies, shocks or seduces audiences, while remaining one of the rare directors referred to by both filmmakers and critics of the entire world. He is currently finishing his latest film "Eloge de l'amour."
