Each month, UniFrance offers free viewing of a short film (documentary, drama, or animated film) that has been acclaimed at recent film festivals.
This month, we present The Park by Randa Maroufi as our film of the month.
With around 200 productions winning awards at foreign film festivals each year, French short films often attract the lion's share of attention at international events. Whether documentaries, animated films, experimental productions, or dramas, all genres succeed in winning awards.
In order to faithfully reflect this reality, UniFrance proposes to regularly highlight French short films through its Short Film of the Month series, which it recently inaugurated.
For some years now, Le Fresnoy has welcomed major and reputed artists from the international scene; when it comes to cinema, we can mention Raoul Ruiz, Robert Kramer, and Jean-Luc Godard. The Studio National des Arts Contemporains has also contributed to the creation of films by such prestigious directors as Claire Denis, Bruno Dumont, and Philippe Garrel.
Short films are not neglected either, and numerous emerging talents in the field have studied at Le Fresnoy: Ana Vaz, Benoît Forgeard, Giacomo Abbruzzese, and more recently Randa Maroufi, whose film The Park we are presenting to you today.
In a succession of spellbinding tracking shots, the film offers a stroll through a neglected park in the heart of Casablanca. With its inspired moments of silence, it questions our relationship with the image and with time - between dream and nightmare.
Maroufi's earlier short, The Great Safae, already made a mark, and the young artist, who lives in Morocco and France, pursues her work into staging the body in public and private spaces.
The film recently won an award in Rotterdam and, after being selected for Clermont-Ferrand and Winterthur, it continues its international run at IndieLisboa.
