More than twenty French productions and majority-French co-productions (and almost as many minority co-productions) are presented at this year's Rotterdam International Film Festival (IFFR) (January 23—February 3, 2019), an event that continues to highlight recent independent and avant-garde works on the margins of traditional filmmaking.
The Rotterdam International Film Festival, founded in 1972, has cemented its position over the years as a major "headhunter" for filmmakers who explore the forms and boundaries of cinema.
A key event on the movie industry calendar, Rotterdam offers a wide range of different sections, including two competitive selections—Bright Future and Voices. French independent filmmaking and experimental works are represented this year by Virgil Vernier and Isabelle Prim in the Bright Future program and, in the Voices section, by the singular female directors Marina De Van (for the world premiere of My Nudity Means Nothing), Eva Ionesco, and Fabienne Godet, who take their place alongside the radical adventures of Merzak Allouache, in the world of politics, and Yann Gonzalez in the aesthetic realm.
In the Limelight section, Catherine Corsini will be in attendance for the screening of An Impossible Love, and Claire Denis will be at the festival to discuss High Life, which features in the Signature section.
