Complete filmography
BiographyBertrand Tavernier knew from a very young age that he would become a movie director. Starting out as a film critic for "Positif," "Les Lettres françaises," "Combat" and "Les Cahiers du cinéma," and as a press attaché, he made his first feature film, "The Clockmaker of St Paul," in 1974. When the film was released, it won the Louis Delluc Prize, a Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and a Silver Hugo at the Chicago Film Festival. Released in 1975, "Let Joy Reign Supreme" also picked up several Cesar Awards, as did his third feature, "The Judge and the Assassin" (1976). These were followed by "Spoiled Children" (1977), "Deathwatch" (1980), which gave actress Romy Schneider one of her finest roles; "A Week’s Vacation" (1981), included in the Official Selection at Cannes in 1981; "Clean Slate" (1982), "Mississippi Blues," co-directed by Robert Parrish; "A Sunday in the Country" (1984), winning him the award for Best Direction at Cannes; "’Round Midnight" (1985), winning an Oscar and a Cesar for the Best Original Music for Herbie Hancock; "Beatrice" (1988), "Life and Nothing But" (1989), Cesar for Best Actor for Philippe Noiret; "Daddy Nostalgia" (1990), the last movie role for Dirk Bogarde; "The Undeclared War" (1991), "L.627" (1992), "D'Artagnan’s Daughter" (1994), "Fresh Bait" (aka "The Bait") in 1995, Golden Bear at Berlin and "Captain Conan" (1996), Cesar for Best Director and Best Actor for Philippe Torreton, who returns in "It All Starts Today," Tavernier’s nineteenth feature film.
