Biography

In 1969, Pascal Bonitzer, with a masters in philosophy, joined the "Cahiers du Cinéma." He wrote his first screenplay, "Moi, Pierre Rivière," for René Allio, in 1976. From that moment on, he combined scriptwriting, "Cahier du Cinéma" editor activities (until 1980) and essay writing on cinema, including "Le Regard et la voix" (10/18, 1976), "Décadrages" (Editions de l'Etoile, 1985) and "Eric Rohmer" (Editions de l'Etoile, 1990). Throughout his impressive scriptwriting career (17 screenplays from 1976 to 1996), he worked most often with Jacques Rivette ("La Bande des quatre" 1987, "La Belle Noiseuse" 1991, "Jeanne la Pucelle" 1994, "Haut, Bas, Fragile" 1995) and André Téchiné ("My Favorite Season," among others). Although attracted by the thought of directing, he didn't want to give up writing, and "waited until he was ready." He directed "Les Sirènes," his first short film, in 1989. "Encore," his first feature, followed in 1996. "Rien sur Robert" (1999) is the comical tale of the complicated love life of a forty-year-old intellectual.
