Biography

Patrice Leconte got his education at the Paris film school (IDHEC), Cinémathèque Française, and from comic books. In 1968, when working with Gotlib as an illustrator for "Pilote" magazine, he began making short films. In 1975, he directed his first film, "Les vécés étaient fermés de l'intérieur," followed by two hit features, "French Fried Vacation" (1978) and "Les Bronzés font du ski" (1979), both in conjunction with the comic troupe associated with the Splendid Theater. Leconte's subsequent films, "Viens chez moi, j'habite chez une copine" (1980) and "Circulez, y'a rien à voir" (1982), confirmed his fondness for comedies of manners. Since 1987, however, he seems to have turned toward a different genre with films such as "Tandem" (1987), "Monsieur Hire" (1989), "The Hairdresser's Husband" (1990), "Yvonne's Perfume" (1993), "Les Grands Ducs" and "Ridicule" (1995). Although laughter isn't absent in these films, the clowns are often sad clowns. With "Half a Chance" (1998) Leconte produced a truly entertaining comedy that brought Jean-Paul Belmondo and Alain Delon (and Vanessa Paradis) together again nearly thirty years after "Borsalino" (1969). Leconte's thirteenth feature, "The Girl on the Bridge," offered magnificent roles to two outstanding actors: Vanessa Paradis and Daniel Auteuil, who was awarded the Cesar for Best Actor, and who worked alongside Juliette Binoche on Leconte's "The Widow of Saint Pierre," released in April 2000. After "Félix and Lola” (2001), starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Philippe Torreton and Alain Bashung, Leconte brought Laetitia Casta and Patrick Timsit together for "Rue des Plaisirs" (2002). He has just finished shooting “L’Homme de train,” with Johnny Hallyday and Jean Rochefort.
