Maria de Medeiros has acted in film, television and theater. Since her first role in 1980 in Joao Cesar Monteiro’s “Sylvestre,” she has performed in more than thirty films in Portugal, France and the United States. She was Anaïs Nin for Philip Kaufman in “Henry and June” (1989), and performed alongside Bruce Willis in Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction.” In 1994, she received the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival for her performance in Teresa Villaverde’s “Tres Irmaos.” This was followed by the Portuguese Golden Globe for her work in “Adam and Eve,” by Joaquim Leitao. In terms of French cinema, she has appeared in “Good News from God,” by Didier Le Pêcheur, “Babel,” by Gérard Pullicino and “L’Homme de ma vie,” by Jean-Charles Tachella. Since graduating in the mid-80s from the National Conservatory for Dramatic Arts in France, she has performed in various plays on the French stage. She directed three short films (“Severine C,” “Fragment II” and “A Morte do principe”) before writing and directing her first feature film, “Capitaine d’avril,” which has been selected for many international film festivals (Cannes, Montréal, Toronto, Pusan, Sao Paulo). The film will be released in France 17 January, 2001.
