Biography

Rachid Bouchareb made his first feature film, “Baton rouge,” in 1985, which won the Grand Prix at the Amiens Film Festival. He then made “Raï” for television along with Khaled. In 1991, he produced and directed “Cheb,” a film that picked up numerous awards at international film festivals: Special Mention, Audience Award at Cannes; Bronze Leopard at Locarno; CICAE Prize at Berlin. During the 1990s, he produced several films in collaboration with Jean Bréhat, including "West Beirut" by Ziad Doueiri and "Humanity" by Bruno Dumont. The latter film won the awards for Best Actor and Best Actress at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival. While involved with production, he also directed “Poussière de Vie” ("Dust of Life," 1994), nominated for the 1995 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. In 1997, he directed the television drama “L’Honneur de ma famille” for the cultural channel Arte and another feature film, “Little Senegal,” in 2000, starring Sotigui Kouyaté and Roschdy Zem.
