This year, among the 92 films submitted by the various countries for consideration in the Foreign-Language Film category at the upcoming Oscars, 26 titles are French co-productions—in addition to France's submission, BPM (Beats Per Minute). Four of these titles are majority-French co-productions. This is a historic high point for France!
Last year, 17 films co-produced by France featured among the 85 contenders in the first round for nomination in the Best Foreign-Language Film category. This year, France counts as a co-production partner in 27 of the 92 films submitted, representing 32% of all titles, which testifies once again to the great dynamism of French production companies in the international arena.
The whittling down of the list of candidates happens in stages, with the short list of around ten films to be announced before the end of the year. The final list of nominees for the Oscar will be unveiled on January 23, 2018, prior to the awards ceremony held on March 4.
The film chosen by the French selection committee to represent France, BPM (Beats Per Minute), is not included in the following list of submissions. Majority-French co-productions are shown in bold.
