Biography

French and Latin professor, leader and oldest member of the "Cahiers du Cinéma" team (he was its Editor-in-chief from 1957 to 1963), Eric Rohmer began his directing career in 1959 with "The Sign of Leo," a film adhering to New Wave principles. In 1962, he started his famous series of "Six Moral Tales" and continued directing them until 1972. One of the series, "My Night at Maud's" (1969), was to make him a celebrity twenty years after he'd started out. After "The Marquise of O" (1975) and "Perceval" (1978), he started work on a second series of six features entitled "Comedies and Proverbs," (1980 to 1987). In 1989, he tackled a third series, "Tales of the Four Seasons," which he finished in 1998 with "An Autumn Tale." Rohmer has recently begun shooting a new feature "L'Anglaise et le Duc" with Jean-Claude Dreyfus.
