Three French films have been selected for Competition at the next Venice International Film Festival which will take place from 1 through 11 September, 2021. Stéphane Brizé will present Another World, Audrey Diwan, Happening, and Xavier Giannoli, Lost Illusions.
A return to Competition in Venice for Stéphane Brizé, who had presented A Woman's Life there in 2016. Another World brings together the couple Vincent Lindon/Sandrine Kiberlain (whom the filmmaker had directed in Mademoiselle Chambon) and continues his exploration of the world of the contemporary workplace with this tale in which a business executive is confronted with his directors' contradictory demands
Audrey Diwan, for her second film after Losing It, has adapted Annie Ernaux's novel for Happening, the story of an abortion in France in 1963.
Lastly, with Lost Illusions, Xavier Giannoli has adapted Balzac's novel and traces the famous journey of a young provincial poet (played by Benjamin Voisin) once he "comes up to the capital." It's the third time that the director has presented a film in Competition in Venice, after Superstar in 2012 and Marguerite in 2015.
In addition to these three majority-French films, five other minority-French coproductions are among the 21 titles selected for Competition, including new films by Michelangelo Frammartino and Michel Franco.
Finally, still in Official Selection, but Out of Competition, Yvan Attal will present his seventh feature film, Les Choses humaines. Two French documentaires also join the Out of Compétition strand: Trenches by Loup Bureau, and Republic of Silence by Diana El Jeiroudi, coproduced with Germany.
