Biography

The fifties were an ardent decade for Véra Belmont, and though she was expelled from the Communist Youth, she continued to dream, in Paris cinemas, of a better future. She frequented the militant theatre - taking to the stage with Gabriel Garran to play Jean-Paul Sartre's "The Respectable Whore" - and surrounded herself with unknowns whose latent talent she could see. On credit, she produced Paul Vecchiali's first film, then Franju's "La Faute de l'abbé Mouret" and later Maurice Pialat's first film "L'Enfance nue". Her production company, Stephan Films, launched many brilliant careers including those of André Téchiné and Jean-Jacques Annaud... as she unhesitatingly staked her all to produce projects she genuinely believed in. Having produced over 30 films since 1967, Véra Belmont took to directing in 1977 with "Prisonniers de Mao", and again in 1985 with "Rouge Baiser", a film about the Communist Youth in the fifties featuring Charlotte Valandrey. Following "Milena" in 1989, Véra Belmont made "Marquise", her fourth feature, in 1996. FILMOGRAPHY 1979 Prisonniers de Mao 1985 Rouge baiser 1989 Milena 1996 Marquise
