Complete filmography
BiographyGérard Oury had a notable acting career, performing in more than sixty plays in French and Swiss theaters, twice at the Comédie Française and in numerous films by Yves Allégret and Raoul Walsh. In 1959, he started his directing career with "La Main chaude," and soon concentrated on comedies. His first feature was followed by a series of hits ranging from "The Sucker" (1964) to "Ace of Aces" (1982), from "The Brain" (1968) to "The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob" (1973) via "Delusions of Grandeur" in 1971 and the unbeatable "Don't Look Now – We're Being Shot At" (1966), the perfect showcase for terrific performances from Louis de Funès, André Bourvil, Jean-Paul Belmondo and Yves Montand (amongst others). With ticket sales of seventeen and a half million, it remains to this day the French-language film that has drawn the greatest number of spectators in France. When a host of television broadcasts of the film are added to this number, the total (cinema and television) nears one hundred and fifteen million spectators. Oury has not only co-authored many screenplays with his daughter, Danièle Thomson (who directed "La Bûche"), he also enjoys filming actors: Coluche in "The Vengeance of the Winged Serpent" (1984), Richard Anconina and Michel Boujenah in "Levy & Goliath" (1986), Pierre Arditi in "Vanille Fraise" (1989), Christian Clavier in "Thirst for Gold" (1993), Philippe Noiret and Gérard Jugnot in "Fantôme avec chauffeur" (1996) and now Ticky Holgado and Smain in "Le Schpountz."
Oury was inducted into the Académie des Beaux-Arts on March 1, 2000. |
