Biography

Alice Douard studied film directing at La Fémis. Her graduation film, Extrasystole (2013), was selected for numerous festivals. She then directed two other short films, Girls (2015) and Due West (2019), while also working as a script supervisor. In 2022, she founded Les Films de June with Marie Boitard and directed Expecting (2022), which won the César Award for Best Short Film in 2024. That same year, she directed and co-produced her first feature film, Love Letters.

Alice Douard on 'Love Letters' (Des preuves d'amour)

Céline is about to become a mother, but it’s her wife Nadia who is pregnant. In Love Letters, Alice Douard follows this non-gestational mother as she searches for her place under the gaze of friends, family, and the law, questioning what makes someone a “real” parent.

After premiering earlier this year at Cannes in Critics’ Week, the film is now reaching new audiences, with releases in Belgium on November 19 and Switzerland on November 27.

In our interview, Alice Douard talks about queer parenthood, the fragile feeling of legitimacy, and how love can be both a protection and a battleground.
