Claude Zidi has made popular comedies his speciality. He has had box-office hits with "La Moutarde me monte au nez" ("Lucky Pierre") in 1974, starring Pierre Richard, "L'Aile ou la cuisse" (The Wing and the Thigh") in 1976, starring Louis de Funès and Coluche, and "Les Sous-doués" in 1980. He proved his ability to direct films that are simultaneously popular and ambitious in 1984 with "Les Ripoux" ("My New Partner") and again in 1986 with "Association de Malfaiteurs." As a comic author in his own right, Zidi demonstrated his talent for social satire with "La Totale!" ("The Jackpot!") in 1991 and "Arlette" in 1997. "Asterix & Obelix versus Caesar" (1999), one the biggest box-office draws in the history of French cinema (8.9 million admissions in France), was adapted by Zidi from the famous comic book series, and once again with style, tells a story with broad popular appeal.
