Biography

After studying classical literature, Régis Wargnier abandoned his plan to study at the IDHEC (FEMIS) film school, preferring to learn his craft on the job He started out as a stand-in for Michel Piccoli on Claude Chabrol's "Ten Days Wonder" in 1972, going on to work as a camera assistant and production assistant on feature films such as Valerio Zerlini's "Desert of the Tartars" and then as assistant director to Francis Girod, Volker Schlöndorff, Margarethe von Trotta, Elie Chouraqui and Alexandre Arcady, among others.

"La Femme de ma vie" (1986) was his first feature, starring Jane Birkin and Christophe Malavoy. Three years later, "I'm the King of the Castle" was released. "Indochina" (1992) featured a prestigious cast (Vincent Pérez, Catherine Deneuve, Dominique Blanc and Jean Yanne) and was a major international success (it was awarded the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film). In 1996, Emmanuelle Béart played the lead in "A French Woman" opposite Daniel Auteuil. "East-West," starring Sandrine Bonnaire, was the French candidate at the 2000 Academy Awards. The film was also nominated at the Cesar awards in the Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress categories.
