The Grand Prize winner at this year's Cannes Film Festival has been selected to represent France at the upcoming Academy Awards.
A Prophet (A Prophet) has been singled out to represent France by the Oscars selection committee, composed of seven members: Florence Malraux, president of the "Avance sur Recettes" Commission; Thierry Frémaux, Director of the Cannes Film Festival; Alain Terzian, president of the Cesars Academy; the actress Jeanne Moreau, and the directors Jean-Jacques Annaud, Costa GavrasRégis Wargnier (the most recent French winner of best Foreign-Language Film for Indochine in 1993).
The film by Jacques Audiard is still not sure to enter the Oscars race, since the final decision on nominees is left to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The candidates in the Best Foreign-Language film category will be announced in Los Angeles in January 2009, with the 82nd Oscars ceremony to be held the following month.
