Summer is here, and June proved slower in admissions than the month prior. We note that the two leading films in the ratings have inversed positions compared with May.
The award for the most-seen French production in June goes to Miss Sloane. The film by John Madden attracted almost 110,000 spectators in 5 territories. Among them, Spain was the country where the thriller garnered its highest figures. Released mid-May, the number of screens remained virtually unchanged throughout the first three weeks of the film's run, with a maximum of 267 theaters recorded in its second week. The title was still among the Spanish Top 10 at the beginning of June. To date, it has clocked up 166,500 admissions and €1 million in box office revenues, 75,000 of which were in the month of June, which makes it the 3rd most successful French film of the year in Spain, and the best performance in international theaters, just behind the USA ($3.50 million in box office revenues, being around 404,500 spectators). Further east, Miss Sloane also attracted 27,500 Polish spectators.
After two months in the lead, Two is a Family drops down a place in the monthly ratings, but maintains its status as the most successful French film of 2017. Still in Poland, after being presented during the 8th edition of the New French Cinema festival, the film launched strongly in 145 theaters, garnering 102,000 admissions during its opening week in mid-May. The dramedy's success didn't stop there, because 79,000 additional spectators were recorded in June, allowing the film to attain a solid total of admissions thus far of 238,000 (€1.07 million in box office revenues). Since January 2017, in Poland, only Leap has done better, with 508,000 enchanted spectators, whereas the 66,500 total admissions of Mune represented the highest score for a majority French film recorded before the arrival of Two is a Family.
For the very first time, The Midwife has entered the monthly Top 20 thanks to six new international releases. In Italy, the latest film by Martin Provost got off to a good start by attracting 24,500 spectators for 100 prints, after 7 days in theaters. Although it has generated more admissions than the director's previous films in this territory (Séraphine and Violette), the film faced stiff competition between distributors who program their last titles of the current season before the start of summer, and had to cope with a strong drop in cinema-going audiences in Italy. In June, The Midwife notably appealed to 43,000 Italian, 20,000 German, and 13,500 Argentinean spectators.
Apart from the Top 3, we should also mention the return of Penny Pincher!, which has been enjoying a fine career in the theaters of two Eastern European countries, in Russia (89,000 total admissions), and in Hungary (9,500). Across the Channel, it's an animation film that stands out and seems to have benefitted from the support of exhibitors and good word-of-mouth: The Red Turtle has generated ₤219,500 in box office revenues, being around 32,500 spectators (with a total of 67,000 to date), in the United Kingdom.
