Complete filmography
BiographyIn 1928, at the age of 20, Manoel de Oliveira was a pole-vaulting champion and a topracing driver. But his passion for film gained the upper hand. He signed up for the film actors' training school that the Italian director, Rino Lupa, had just opened in Porto. This was the beginning of a cinematic adventure which would put him behind a camera to become Portugal's most representative director. His many films have often been inspired by literary or theatrical works. They include «Aniki-Bobo» (1942), his first fiction feature, «Le Soulier de satin»(1985), Special Golden Lion at the Venice;Festival, and «Le Jour du désespoir» (1992), Honorary Leopard at the Locarno Festival... 1995 saw the release of two films by Manoel de Oliveira in France: «Blind Man's Buff» (February 1995) and «The Convent» which competed in Officia Selection at Cannes. In 1996, «Party» starred Michel Piccoli and Irene Papas. «Journey to the Beginning of the World» was Marcello Mastroianni's last film. His latest feature, «The Letter», was selected for the 1999 Cannes Festival where it won the Jury Prize.
