Although they progressed by 43% last month, in November, the admissions generated by majority French productions again lost ground and diminished by 40% in comparison with the previous month (-51% compared with the same period in 2017). 2 titles each attracted more than 100,000 spectators (compared with 5 in October), while 3 others verged on this symbolic threshold.
The most popular comedy among French audiences since the return from summer break rose to the top of the monthly chart! Sink or Swim began its international career, notably in the French-speaking markets. After 5 weeks in theaters, characterized by a constant progression in terms of screens (from 8 to 15), Sink or Swim remained in the top 3 in French-speaking Switzerland, where it had already appealed to 33,000 spectators (€436,000 in box office revenues)! In Belgium, where it launched a week after Nothing to Hide (€1.23 million in box office revenues and 171,500 spectators), Sink or Swim seems to have suffered from this competition because its box office intake was two times less (€590,000 and 82,500 admissions), but word of mouth enabled it to still remain in 35 cinemas after 5 weeks. Gilles Lellouche's film also did well in Quebec, where it achieved the 2nd best launch of the year for a French film, behind La Ch'tite Famille (CA$492,500 and 52,000 total admissions) with a very high box office revenues average per print of CA$9,500 (€6,500 and 1,000 admissions). Sink or Swim will release during the New Year period in Italy and Portugal.
A new title took 2nd position in the monthly ratings. Belleville Cop also attracted more than 100,000 foreign spectators in November, around 61,000 of which were in Belgium (€436,500 in box office revenues) and more than 20,000 were in Israel (€161,500). The cop comedy launched in several Eastern European territories, garnering more than 10,000 admissions in Bulgaria, Croatia, and Romania. In Hungary, the drew in 12,000 spectators (€56,000 in box office revenues) and rose to 3rd position in the local chart. For the first time in 2018, a French title claimed a leading place at the Hungarian box office the week it opened! The international career of Belleville Cop will continue in 2019, when it will arrive in Germany and Spain, among other territories.
After having dominated the charts for two consecutive months, White Fang relinquished its position without however leaving the leading 3 titles. The animated film continued its fine Italian career and captured the attention of 74,000 additional spectators, taking its total admissions to 331,500 since mid-October (€2.06 in box office revenues). This is the best score for this film outside France, ahead of Poland (226,000 admissions and €876,500), where the film became the most viewed French title of the year, as was the case in Croatia (22,500 admissions and €80,500), and Norway (22,000 spectators and €222,000). Danish and Greek audiences will encounter White Fang during the Christmas vacation period.
Among the titles outside the Top 3, we should note the sterling success encountered by Maria by Callas in North America (around $850,000 in box office revenues and more than 100,000 spectators in Canada and the USA)! In Turkey, despite its challenging subject matter, Climax broke through on a market dominated by local and US productions and appealed to 30,000 moviegoers (€65,500).
