In August, an action comedy was exported to China, a thriller charmed Russian audiences, and a comedy got off to a good start in Portugal.

Although July 2018 was a difficult month for French films at the international box office, August results are (slightly) more encouraging. Majority French productions attracted 2.25 million foreign spectators, being 43.3% more than the previous month. By itself alone, Taxi 5 made up almost half the global monthly score, while Miss Sloane was the only other title to cross the 100,000 admissions threshold during the month. The comparison with the same period in 2017 remains defavorable to the current year: at the same time as Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets and Overdrive drew full houses, 4 other films attracted more than 100,000 spectators.
At the beginning of August, Taxi 5 hit the road heading east, arriving in China. The film represented 10% of the screenings (being around 6,000) of all the country's theaters and produced the 4th best score on the day of its release. The only foreign production to feature among the local Top 10, with this year's Japanese Palme d'or winner, Shoplifters, Taxi 5 disappeared from Chinese screens a week after it opened and with a total of 1 million admissions and €3.83 million in box office revenues. The action film did not achieve expectations, despite a fair result for a French-language film in China—that is higher than those of the earlier episode (in 2007, Taxi 4 accumulated 572,000 spectators and €1.49 million in box office revenues). Since Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (11.6 million spectators and €57.3 million in box office revenues), no French title has crossed the million admissions threshold in China. To date, Taxi 5 has attracted 2.4 million foreign spectators (€9.93 million), of which 426,500 in Russia, which makes it the greatest French success in 2018 on the international scene.
Although its international career was mainly established last year, Miss Sloane has enjoyed a new release. The thriller was launched in 426 Russian theaters and is still programmed after 4 weeks on screen, for a provisional 157,000 total admissions (€615,000 in box office revenues). Miss Sloane is the 3rd French title to appeal to more than 100,000 spectators in Russia since January, after Taxi 5 (Central Partnership, 426,000 admissions and €1.44 million in box office revenues) and C'est la vie! (Capella Film, 171,000 admissions and €756,500 at the box office). Added to which, this is the 3rd time the film has crossed this threshold in a foreign territory, after the USA (RED, $3.5 million and 404,500 spectators) and Spain (eOne Entertainment España, 173,500 admissions and €1.02 million at the box office), for a total of 1.35 million specators and €9.52 million in box office revenues outside France.
The last place at the podium is taken by La Ch'tite Famille. The largest part of the film's monthly result comes from Poland, where the comedy brought together 42,500 spectators (€184,000 in box office revenues) for a 100-screen release, which nevertheless remains the weakest score among the 5 films by Dany Boon distributed in this country. Programmed by 29 Portuguese theaters, La Ch’tite Famille charmed 14,000 spectators (€74,500 in B.O. revenues). This launch, which took it to 8th position in the local Top 10, is the best ever achieved by a Dany Boon film in Portugal and allowed him to double the scores of all his other titles in this country, apart from Welcome to the Land of Ch'tis (Filmes Castello Lopes, 2008, 38,000 admissions and €186,500 in total box office revenues). Thanks to these new releases, La Ch’tite Famille has sold one million tickets outside France! The film notably brought together 306,000 Belgian spectators (€2.19 million), 264,500 Germans (€2.14 million), and 122,000 Spanish moviegoers (€764,500).
The 4th place holder this month is C'est la vie!, which has drawn in more than 2 million spectators outside France (€14.7 in box office revenues)! Already distributed in fifty territories, the latest film by the Nakache/Toledano duo achieved its best results in Spain and Germany (respectively 369,000 and 361,000 admissions), without forgetting that it attracted more than 100,000 spectators in Belgium, Israel, Italy, Russia, and Switzerland.
Outside the Top 20, we should also mention that The House by the Sea has at last reached 100,000 admissions in Italy (€603,000 in box office revenues)! Presented at the Venice International Film Festival and the Rendez-vous – Nuovo cinema francese, it has been out on release since mid-April and in this country has achieved its best performance outside France. Robert Guédiguian's film is also the most successful French title of the year in Finland, where it charmed 18,000 moviegoers (€178,000).
