In July, a debut film won over Russian audiences, while a comedy was released in Italy and a drama charmed moviegoers in Mexico.

July 2018 was a difficult month for French films abroad. Majority-French productions registered a total of 1.57 million admissions, a decline of 21% over last month. Furthermore, not one of these productions attracted more than 100,000 spectators, whereas five productions attained this figure in June. If we compare these results with the same period last year, the difference is even more severe: in July 2017, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets generated 6.73 million admissions, while Overdrive and Two is a Family registered 657,000 and 305,000 admissions respectively, with a total monthly score that was eight times higher than this year.
The top 3 titles make their first appearance in our chart's leading positions. Rolling to You takes 1st place thanks to two large-scale launches. This comedy's opening in Russia was the most ambitious, with 340 sites deployed and 37,000 spectators recorded (€127,500 in ticket sales), while in Germany, despite a more modest release, it tallied 29,000 admissions (€210,000). To date, this film by Franck Dubosc has achieved its best performances in two French-speaking markets: Belgium (€627,000, registering around 87,000 admissions) and French-speaking Switzerland (€492,000, 41,000 admissions). Sold in several other countries, Rolling to You will be released in two new markets at the start of the fall season.
In 2nd position is a comedy which held high expectations following its success in France, but results have so far fallen short. In July, The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir was released in around a dozen markets, achieving its best opening in Italy, where 30,000 moviegoers came out to see it (€142,000). In Taiwan, it registered 21,500 admissions (€139,000), thus ranking as the second highest-performing French production in Taiwan this year, behind Taxi 5 (24,000 admissions, €161,000). This film's international run has only just started, so it remains to be seen how its career pans out.
Happy End featured in previously monthly charts, but had not broken into the Top 3 until now. This drama is currently showing in two Spanish-speaking countries, Mexico and Spain. In July, it won over 40,500 spectators in Mexico (€109,000) and 31,000 in Spain (€182,500). Its score in Mexico is similar to that of an earlier film by the same director The Pianist (2002, 44,000 admissions), but below that of Love (2013, 181,000 admissions), which still stands as Michael Haneke's most successful title in this market. Five of the director's films have topped 100,000 admissions in Spain, of which The White Ribbon was the most popular, with 282,500 admissions in 2010, and Code Unknown came close, with 84,500 admissions. At this point, Happy End has only exceeded the results of Time of the Wolf (9,000 admissions) and appears far from achieving a comparable score. Nevertheless, this drama now posts a running total of 554,000 admissions in theaters outside France, including 92,500 in Germany.
Apart from the Top 3 titles, the release of Back to Burgundy in Australia stands out as the best performance of the month. On screens for five weeks now, this dramatic comedy has taken AUD$700,000 in receipts (50,000 admissions), making it the 3rd most popular French film in Australia in 2018, behind Fifty Springtimes (AUD$793,000, 57,000 admissions) and Just to Be Sure (released late 2016, AUD$1.4 million and 103,500 admissions at the end of its run). Thanks also to the good reception of Two is a Family (AUD$423,500, 30,000 admissions), French cinema is enjoying something of a comeback in Australia at this time.
