The Little Prince has got off to a flying start in China. Jumping to 3rd place at the box office in its opening weekend, it attracted an impressive 4.7 million spectators in less than three weeks on the screens! This sets a new record for French animated films in China, with this score far outstripping previous hit performances by Minuscule in 2014 (811,000 admissions) and Arthur and the Invisibles in 2007 (607,000). In another Asian market, Taiwan, the film was screened in French, English, and Mandarin, and sat at 2nd place at the box office, with over 27,000 admissions registered in its opening week. At the end of October, Le Petit Prince tallied a total of 804 million admissions in markets outside France.
French animated films have made a strong impact overall in foreign theaters in 2015. In an unprecedented situation since the birth of the genre, three majority French animated films feature among the Top 10 best-performing French titles since the beginning of the year. Number 2 on the list and just behind the number 1 English-language title, Le Petit Prince has, as we have seen, won over large audiences in China, but also in Brazil (2 million admissions) and Poland (750,000). Asterix - The Mansion of the Gods has attracted 2.9 million moviegoers in some thirty foreign markets. Thanks to the one million admissions registered in Russia, Mune takes 7th place in our list, with 1.9 million admissions to its credit at the end of October. We can also note the appearance at 16th place of Yellowbird, which has amassed 500,000 spectators in 2015, for a total of 800,000 admissions in international theaters to date.
2015 looks set to be a historic year for French films in Brazil. While Le Petit Prince has achieved a record-breaking performance as the most successful French film in more than 20 years, by the end of October, French films had already registered over 5 million admissions in this market—exceeding the figures of 2014 (3.7 million) and 2012 (4.2 million). The roughly sixty films released in 2015 confirm the excellent state of health of French cinema in Brazil, a market in which national movie attendance figures are on the rise and the number of theaters in operation is increasing. Among the top performances in Brazil in 2015, we can mention that of The Salt of the Earth (130,000 admissions), Samba (115,000 + 16,000 registered at the Varilux festival), and Serial (Bad) Weddings (94,000 + 13,000).
Returning to European theaters, The New Adventures of Aladdin has enjoyed a strong debut in Belgium. The film by Arthur Benzaquen has generated over €500,000 in 2 weeks, representing close to 75,000 spectators. Sitting in 5th position in the weekly charts at the time of its release, it registered the highest number of admissions per print, outperforming several new titles from the American majors.
