Synopsis
When we hear the word “Gaza,” images of ruins, bombs, and fighting are what most often come to mind. Yet the Gaza Strip has a long and rich political and cultural history, marked by thousands of personal stories, shaped by the broader history of the Middle East and by the Israeli occupation over the past few decades. How did this tiny strip of land—365 square kilometers, landlocked between Israel, Egypt, and the Mediterranean Sea, home to 2.3 million people, 1.7 million of whom are descendants of refugees—become, over the course of the last century, a region that has been repeatedly devastated and ravaged by violence?
