Synopsis
An hour and a quarter on an unknown planet : the Earth seen on a minute scale. The inhabitants : outlandish creatures, insects and other grass and water animals. The scenery : the impenetrable forests of grass, dew-drops as big as balloons... The film explores this new world - an ordinary meadow - over the course of a summer's day : a day, a night and a second dawn. But a single day is like a season in this minute world. A whole decade for an insect whose life-span can be counted in weeks.

About
"Microcosmos" was one of the unexpected surprises of the 1996 Cannes Festival. It was totally different from the films normally screened there and the quality of the footage of this "microcosmic" realm was exceptional. The whole world started expressing interest in the film. In Switzerland, it met with phenomenal success, second in the box-office even before its French release. In Germany, with 600,000 tickets sold, "Microcosmos" was one of the top French films of the last five years. It subsequently met with equal success in many other countries : South Korea, Greece, Great Britain, Lebanon... In September 1997, it will be released in Japan. "Microcosmos" has made an impact all over the world. This unusual, attractive, and unexpected film has become a phenomenon. it was a genuine surprise. We had always believed in it but we were the only ones ! We knew that the film had enormous potential but, unfortunately, each films is a special case. A film's career abroad does not depend solely on its merits. For everything to come together to make it a worldwide hit, it needs luck too. "Microcosmos" had luck."
(Jacques-Eric Strauss - Président Films)
