A marketing executive on the fast track to success, married and the mother of a little girl who just turned seven, Johanna, 37, is a woman for whom life is going well. Until everything changes. In the middle of the night, while completely unconscious, she gives birth to a child she wasn’t expecting. In a daze, unable to cope with what was happening to her, she abandoned the newborn. The child was found alive, but Johanna was charged with attempted infanticide. She doesn’t understand what’s happening to her and swears she didn’t know she was pregnant! Her husband and loved ones are just as incredulous. The diagnosis is shocking and baffling: Johanna has been in denial about her pregnancy. Judged and rejected by everyone, Johanna will have to answer for her actions. Facing the legal system, society, her family, and those around her, she embarks on a journey of resilience and healing, which involves discovering her maternal bond with this unexpected child. With the support of her friend, a lawyer, and a nonprofit organization, Johanna will fight to make her voice heard—and the voices of other women who have experienced the same phenomenon: pregnancy denial.
