Synopsis
A film about history and individual destinies, “The Silence des rizières” casts a singular and unusual light upon the Indochina War. This forgotten war is evoked through the stories of those who struggled against colonialism and for Vietnam’s freedom.
André, a Frenchman, was one of these people, and we accompany his daughter, Mai, and her mother, Thuy Cam, as they travel to Vietnam in search of traces of his past.
The film takes a look at the consequences of history on personal lives – in this case within a family, with its share of mythologies, sacrifices, and divisions.
The mingled fates of these people in the shadows reveal the human stakes at risk in a war of decolonization and for national independence that occurred in the middle of the Cold War.
