Mehdi, an Algerian novelist, no longer has the courage to speak out, therefore he writes, while pervading violence indiscriminately carries off bodies and souls.
Mehdi has found a way to continue existing: he works at Alger’s Death Announcements‚ Service. The rest of the time, he lives as a recluse, or nearly, surrounded by sheets of paper covered with words of love and about the burning sun.
Across from Mehdi, there’s Ania, the daughter of French colonials born in Algeria, the woman next door who often appears at the window. She’s an unsettling presence, is even embarrassing for this man who is afraid of causing others the same kind of trouble that hangs over himself.
Nevertheless, Ania regularly brings him tea, at the risk of finding herself locked out…
