She is Tonka, a natural, pure animal speed and grace, a perfect blend of the present moment and the age-old mysteries of India. A Chanel 19 perfumed vagabond, she lives near the runways of Charles de Gaulle Airport in an Ivory Tower she's kitted out for herself inside a giant soft-drink advertising can. She seems to hurtle through life like an unbreakable toy. He is "The Sprinter". He's already come within 1/100th of a second of the European record. For ten years he's epitomised technique, effort, the top-class athlete's ceaseless striving to win. Yet now, he's injured. He no longer knows why he pounds the red running tracks. It's as if he's been bridled, broken. Then, one day, returning listlessly from a field event, he sees her on the highway, running for no reason. Well, yes, because she swiped a croissant and because she loves to run. Tonka is the story of their melding in the heat of an encounter that must surely burn them both and make them one.

"Why speak about "Tonka"? To give others the desire to see this film? Why recount so poorly what they may see so well? All that is important in this film is all that I am incapable of putting into words. Thank you for your understanding." (Jean-Hugues Anglade)
