The third major international film festival of the fall season, following Venice and Toronto, the latest San Sebastian International Film Festival (SSIFF) will take place in the Spanish city from September 18 to 26. Two French films, directed by Nicole Garcia and Fred Cavayé, will be presented in Competition.
These two highly anticipated French films will therefore have their world premieres in Competition at the 73rd SSIFF: Les Misérables, a new adaptation by Fred Cavayé, starring Vincent Lindon and Tahar Rahim in the iconic roles of Valjean and Javert, and 7h40 ce matin-là, by Nicole Garcia, starring Marion Cotillard as Alice, who, after settling in a small town with seemingly no ties, seeks to connect with a young man, Milo, played by Théodore Pellerin. Both films will be accompanied by a wonderful artistic delegation.
Three other (minority-)French co-productions will also be screened in Competition, including the new film by Michael R. Roskam (Le Fidèle), who returns with Le Faux Soir to explore an episode from World War II in which a fake edition of the newspaper Le Soir was created to boost the morale of Belgian troops.
The Perlak section, which brings together films from the year’s major international festivals, will feature many titles discovered at Cannes, including Iron Boy, Minotaur, and All of a Sudden, as well as Coward, Fjord, and Nanni Moretti's latest feature It Will Happen Tonight, which premiered at Venice. Red Rocks by Bruno Dumont, which premiered at Directors' Fortnight, has been scheduled in the Zabaltegi-Tabakalera section.
Overall, French cinema is also represented, as usual, in international co-productions, with about fifteen films across all sections.
A delegation of French artists and industry professionals will be attending, including (subject to change): Nicole Garcia, Marion Cotillard, Fred Cavayé, Vincent Lindon, Tahar Rahim, Noémie Merlant, Camille Cottin, Benjamin Lavernhe, Michael R. Roskam, Karim Leklou, Julien Frison, Virginie Efira, Andreï Zviaguintsev, Éric Toledano, and Olivier Nakache.
A retrospective dedicated to José Giovanni has been organized, featuring the screening of seventeen feature films written or directed by the filmmaker, who passed away in 2004.
Unifrance will host a cocktail reception on Sunday, September 20, at the Maria Cristina Hotel, for all the French talent present in San Sebastián, as well as Spanish distributors.
