In April, a French comedy met with success in German-speaking markets, while an adventure film won over audiences in Spain and Russia, and a debut film continued its outstanding performance in North America.
This month, one French production attracted over 1 million moviegoers in international theaters.

In this period, French productions registered 4.96 million admissions in markets outside France (€33.5 million in ticket sales), with majority-French co-productions accounting for 87% of this figure (4.31 million tickets sold, amounting to €29 million). French films have thus gained ground in international markets compared to the results of March (+24.5%) and also those of April 2018 (+20.5%). Serial Bad Weddings 2 rose to the top of our monthly chart, with Mia and the White Lion holding firm in second place and The Mustang making a surprise entry into the top 3. Western Europe remained the leading export destination for French films, well ahead of other market regions, with admissions figures in Spain since the beginning of the year now exceeding 1 million.
After two months in third place, Serial Bad Weddings 2 jumped ahead of its competitors in April to sit at number 1, with 1.2 million admissions registered in foreign theaters. This score can be largely attributed to its performance in Germany, where, at the end of its fifth weekend, the comedy by Philippe de Chauveron reached a total of 1.01 million admissions (€8.29 million in ticket sales). It is still showing at over 600 sites and remains among the top 5 titles at the German box office. This ranks as the most successful performance by a French film in a foreign market in 2019!
To date, this second installment of the Serial Weddings saga is credited with a total of 2.08 million tickets sold outside France (€16.4 million), of which 201,000 were registered in Italy (€1.23 million), 158,000 in Austria (€1.35 million), and 139,000 in Switzerland (€1.89 million). It has also taken €2.62 million in Belgium (Belga Films, representing 366,000 admissions) and CAD$1.07 million in Quebec (A-Z Films, 113,000 admissions). It is worth remembering that in 2015, the film's first installment ended its international run with 9.85 million admissions (€68.4 million), of which 3.93 million were registered in Germany (Neue Visionen Filmverleih, €28.7 million). Since the release of Serial (Bad) Weddings, Serial Bad Weddings 2 is the only majority-French production shot in French to have crossed the million spectators threshold in Germany.
Mia and the White Lion held strong in second place in April, drawing crowds in two European countries. This adventure film attracted 467,000 moviegoers in Spain (€2.78 million), maintaining such good results that it still figures among the local box office top 5, with the number of sites upped to over 300 theaters in its fourth week. At the same time, in Russia, Mia and the White Lion reached 150,000 admissions (€470,500) after four weeks, of which 30,000 tickets were sold at preview screenings held in 300 theaters. Gilles De Maistre's film currently boasts a running total of 3.78 million admissions garnered in foreign markets (€20.2 million), including 912,000 admissions in Italy (€5.68 million) and 548,000 in Germany (€3.76 million), and looks set to top the 4 million spectators mark abroad thanks to its upcoming release in new markets in the weeks to come.
The Mustang proved a surprise hit this month, breaking into the top 3! A film that is yet to be released in France (where it will be launched on June 19), The Mustang is enjoying considerable success across the Atlantic. A majority-French production (Légende) shot in English, it was first presented at the Sundance Film Festival, after which it debuted in four theaters in the USA, bringing in $94,000 (€83,000, representing 10,000 admissions). Between its fourth and fifth weeks, it raked in over $1 million, with its circulation increased to 487 theaters by its sixth week. By the end of April, The Mustang posted a total of $4.68 million (around 521,000 admissions), and will easily pass the $5 million mark during the month of May. Of all the majority-French productions released in the USA since January 2017, only two films have surpassed this score: Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets ($40.5 million, 4.51 million admissions) and I Am Not Your Negro ($7.12 million, 794,000 admissions).
