In September, an animated film charmed audiences in Poland, while a comedy carved itself a place in the Italian market and two dramas achieved success in Australia and North America.
This month, one French production attracted over 200,000 moviegoers abroad.

The month of September saw majority-French productions generating 1.22 million admissions in theaters outside France. While in comparison to last month this shows a significant decline (-45%), it should be noted that in August the release of Taxi 5 in China accounted, alone, for 1 million admissions. September's figures are the lowest so far this year in our monthly ranking, just behind July (1.6 million spectators abroad). In the same period in 2017, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets garnered 8 million admissions in international theaters, and six other titles registered over 100,000, whereas this year, White Fang is the only title to have crossed the symbolic 100,000 admissions mark in September.
Appearing for the first time in our monthly Top 3, White Fang attracted the largest audience numbers in September 2018. It was in Poland where this animated production achieved its best opening to date outside France and where almost all of the film's admissions were registered this month. Thanks to a strong opening week (44,500 spectators, in 3rd place at the Polish box office), its circulation was increased to 244 sites in its second week. One month after its launch, it tallies a total of 188,000 admissions in Poland (€750,500 in ticket sales) and is fast approaching the score of the most popular French film in Poland this year, Belle and Sebastian, Friends for Life (197,000 admissions and €701,000). Already released in around a dozen markets around the world, White Fang is currently showing in countries such as Germany and Italy.
A comedy was the second best performer in September. Rolling to You, the debut film by Franck Dubosc, was released one week apart in Poland and Italy, attracting more spectators in Italy in its opening week (41,000 admissions for €250,000) than Poland (20,500 admissions, €89,000). While this comedy's most successful international launch to date was in Italy, its best spectator-per-print average was recorded in Poland (300, against 175 in Italy), despite a release in one third of the number of theaters (68 in Poland, 232 in Italy). Released in 25 international markets so far, Rolling to You totals 379,000 admissions abroad (€2.52 million) and has been particularly well-received in French-speaking territories (87,500 admissions in Belgium and 49,000 in Switzerland).
Just a smattering of admissions separates the 3rd and 4th places. The narrow lead won by The Insult can be partly attributed to its successful release in Australia, where this drama raked in AUD$543,500 after one month, representing 38,500 spectators. It registered an excellent average of per-print ticket sales in its opening week (24 sites, AUD$6,300 [€4,000] for 450 admissions), matching the figures of the other titles in the Top 3, which benefited from huge-scale releases (between 220 and 470 sites).
Released abroad at the same as in France, The Sisters Brothers was launched in the USA in September. This western is currently showing in Los Angeles and New York in a total of 4 theaters, generating US$160,500 in ticket sales (€136,500) from around 18,000 spectators. With impressive takings of $40,000 per theater (around 4,500 admissions), the new film by Jacques Audiard had its circulation increased in its second week to 27 sites ($486,500$ [€421,000] and 54,000 admissions, all up). The Sisters Brothers is slated for release in several new markets in upcoming months.
