French films at the international box office: March 2015

In our March report, successful titles released in France earlier in the year are making their mark in international theaters. Among highlights this month, one comedy has broken attendance records in Latin America, while a EuropaCorp production had a strong debut in China.

With 8 majority-French productions (including 7 French-language films) exceeding 100,000 admissions in foreign theaters, French films have put in a healthy performance in March.

The Bélier FamilyThe Bélier Family has crossed the half-million spectators mark in Colombia to become the most popular French film in this country since the early 2000s! Another big export comedy, Serial (Bad) Weddings ended its run in Italy with 632,000 spectators to its credit. This film has now entered the list of Top 5 French-language productions of the past 5 years, outstripping the score of Welcome to the Land of Ch'tis (526,000 admissions in 2008).

Samba is holding strong in Germany, after 4 weeks on the screens. With the number prints in circulation increased from 155 to 192, it registered a total of 235,000 admissions in this market at the end of March. In Spain, where the film is showing in 245 theaters, now in its fourth week, it tallied 315,000 admissions at the end of the month. In both these countries, Samba is the second most successful French-language production of 2015, with its results ranking as the 3rd best performance by a French film in more than five years for the two distributors concerned.

Gett, The Trial of Viviane AmsalemThanks to a significant rise in attendance figures during the school vacation period, Asterix - The Mansion of the Gods attracted 170,000 spectators in Québec at the end of March after five weeks in theaters. Also across the Atlantic, Gett, The Trial of Viviane Amsalem has had its distribution upped from 2 theaters to 69 in the USA and English-speaking Canada since its release mid-February. This film registered close to $600,000 in revenues at the end of March (representing over 70,000 admissions).

A new market to conquer and another excellent performance for Beauty and the Beast! Hitting the top spot at the box office in Bolivia in its opening week, beating out the current Hollywood hits, it had clocked up 25,000 admissions in 3 weeks in 7 theaters by the end of March.

Taken 3 Now into its last major international release, Taken 3 has been launched in China, with the EuropaCorp production pulling in an amazing 5 million spectators in 10 days!
