Synopsis
Ladakh, in northern India, is now considered one of the most threatened regions in the world by climate change. Here, the rapid melting of glaciers is causing an increasingly severe water shortage, irreversibly altering the ecosystem.
In response to this catastrophe, Sonam Wangchuck, known as the «ice architect,» developed a technical process capable of saving the lives of thousands of residents. The name of this process consists of two words: «ice stupas.»
Inspired by the conical shape of Hindu temples, these small ice pyramids, true water castles, are based on a simple architectural technique and help alleviate water scarcity during the dry season. This innovative method is now being applied in regions around the world where glacier melt is accelerating.
