In the middle of World War I, when Europe was being torn apart, Ludwig Kirchner, one of the leading exponents of German expressionism, was convalescing in a sanitarium and painted Western Port in Frankfurt am Main (1916). His nightmare vision was a premonition of the collapse of the nation-state machine.
