In Florence during the Quattrocento, the cradle of the Renaissance, Sandro Botticelli, favorite painter of Lorenzo de' Medici (known as Lorenzo the Magnificent) created this sumptuous allegory of spring around 1482. A hymn to beauty, it celebrates a prince who sought to unite art and science in order to raise the status of his city above all others.
