Synopsis

In the midst of the Golden Age of the young Dutch republic, the painter Johannes Vermeer took a brief hiatus from his intimate depictions of women to express in this portrait of a contemporary scientist the tremendous scientific and cultural expansion of his era, which was the fountainhead of modern capitalism.
